The Same Place or Neere
A new series of paintings exploring real world places we can't experience. I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of locations, places, and/or environments being simultaneously real and not real. Examples include Dutch interiors in 17th century genre painting, modern recreations of forts or historic sites for museums, and so on. These are all, in some fashion, places we can see with our eyes or visit, even if their state has changed; they are places that we know do or did exist in a very physical or tangible way but because of the passage of time, changes in need or purpose, or the simple act of forgetting, we can no longer experience them in the same way and they remain unknowable to us.
